General News
1. Ken Ruinard-Anderson Independent-Mail — nice job making an interesting image out of challenging light and what could have been a very dull story.
2. Ken Ruinard-Anderson Independent-Mail — Back to school-we all have to shoot them but this image does a good job of showing the child’s anxiety/nervousness. Good composition
3. Heidi Heilbrunn-Greenville News — its a real news event unlike many of the photos in this category but we felt the photo would have been improved if the photographer worked the angle a little more

Feature

A special word of thanks needs to go out to the photo staff at the Knoxville News-Sentinel for judging our April clip contest.

April 2008 Results

Spot News
1. Kristin Goode-The Island Packet
A good shot. The photographer got great expression. We liked how clean and well composes the photo is. You can really see the fear and relief in the girls faces.

2. Sefton Ipock-Anderson Independent-Mail
We really liked how the photog used so many different elements for what would otherwise be a very typical fire photo. The sun, the firefighter, the ladder and the framing add so much more.

3. Lindsay Semple-The State
Its a nice moment. Kudos to the photographer for seeing it.

General News
1. Heidi Heilbrunn-Greenville News
This is a fantastic photo of powerful emotion, depth and lighting. We quickly agreed that the photo takes the first place prize

2. Jonathan Dyer- The Island Packet
The body language, the cigarette, the gum , the old beat up pick up truck, and the alligator tail all add up for one phenominal photo.

3. Angie Kershner-Morning News
The clean composition and the great light makes this photo an easy stand out in the entire category.

Feature
1. Grace Beahm- Post and Courier
We loved the angle this photo was take from. What really impressed us is the photographers use of the string lines, not only from the bridge but from the boats wake also.

2. Grace Beahm- Post and Courier
The monotone feel from an already surreal setting gives this photo an alien quality that adds to an already strange subject matter. We just kept staring at it.

3. Gerry Melendez- The State
We see this shot often, but rarely are they as successful in storytelling and composition as it is here. I hope the editor gave this photo some size, otherwise they just wasted a good shot.

Sports
1. Ken Ruinard- Anderson Independent-Mail
We all love watching a train wreck and what makes this photo so magnificent is that the photographer got everyone watching it. The open mouthed expression on their faces tell everything and more. Its a magnificent shot.

2. Heidi Heilbrunn- Greenville News
Theres nothing we can say that can elaborate anymore on how superb this photo is by looking at it. The photographer has captured what seems like one of the greatest moments of their lives

3. Grace Beahm-Post and Courier
The reaction tell more about the sporting event than the action. This photo embodies all that and more

Multiple
1. Lindsay Semple-The State
This is a fantastic story. The edit is superb and the photos are beautiful. We konw the story without having to read the captions. An congratulations to the photographer and editor for a magnificent piece. Every photo is strong but when you put it together its powerful

2. Ken Ruinard-Anderson Independent-Mail
We debated extensively on this package and concluded that even though the photos are not the best compositionally , we commend the photographer for capturing the powerful emotions. We actually feel the pain friends and family had to endure. Good Work.

3. Rebecca Ducker- Morning News
A common story but shot extremely well. Its a great edit and the compositions are wonderful, especially in the first photo. Following one prom couple throughout the night is a great concept.

March 2008 Clip Results

Congratulations to the March 2008, clip contest winners. We are still waiting on the results of the February contest and will have them posted as soon as we get them.

Spot News
1st: Gerry Melendez-The State – Tornado Damage
2nd: Sefton Ipock-Anderson Independent-Mail – School bus accident
3rd: Nathan Gray-Anderson Independent-Mail – Fire

The first place entry was a clear winner because it
had good emotion in the foreground and a story-telling
background. Second place had good emotion but the
context was more difficult to determine. Third place
was hard to decide but we chose to reward the
photographer for getting to the fire quickly and
capturing a lot of flames.

General News
1st: Sefton Ipock-Anderson Independent-Mail – Vietnam Wall
2nd: Heidi Heilbrunn-Greenville News – Antiwar candlelight vigil
3rd: Nathan Gray Anderson Independent-Mail – Scots-Irish Festival

Most of the photos entered in the category should have
been entered in the Features category in our
opinion. First place was a clean, easy-to-read photo
with some good emotion. Second place had a nice
graphic quality. We liked the third place photo a lot
even though it didn’t seem to be a general news
photo. However, it is a great feature photo and we
thought it deserved recognition.

Feature Single
1st: Nathan Gray- Anderson Independent-Mail – Dog Splash
2nd: Heidi Heilbrunn-Greenville News – Umbrella
3rd: Ken Ruinard-Anderson Independent-Mail – Skateboarders

The first and second place photos are nice moments
that everyone can identify with. Third place had some
good action and faces, but one judge thought it was
cropped too loose.

Sports
1st: Rebecca Ducker-The Morning News – Basketball Dejection
2nd: Gerry Melendez-The State– Baseball catch
3rd: Ken Ruinard-The Anderson Independent-Mail – NC Basketball jube

The emotion of the first place photo outweighed its
technical problems. Second place was the best of all
the peak action photos. Third place is a good
basketball jubilation shot composed well with lots of
good faces.

Portrait
1st: Randall Hill-Sun News – McCain baby
2nd: Ken Ruinard -Anderson Independent-Mail – Ten Dollar Tip
3rd: Ken Ruinard -Anderson Independent-Mail – Dog

First place was very funny and cute. Second place was
a good real moment. Third place was clever. There
was some discussion about the purpose of this
category. Was it meant to reward good portraiture or
a more loosely defined type of “portrait”? The actual
“real” setup and lit portraits were not as good as the
found moments.

Illustration
1st: Lindsay Semple-The State – Presidential food
2nd: Sefton Ipcok – Anderson Independent-Mail– Pancakes
3rd: Rebecca Ducker- The Morning News – Dog bath

There were only four entries in this quarterly
category.

Feature Multiple
1st: Gerry Melendez-The State – Skating Rink
2nd: Ken Ruinard- Anderson Independent-Mail – Fragile X Syndrome
3rd – Sefton Ipock- Anderson Independent-Mail– Firefighter funeral

First place was the clear winner. It had lots of
variety and moments. Second and third place were the
best of the rest.

Standings (These standings are only for the January and march contests as we have not received the results from the February contest yet.)
