April 2008 Results

Spot News
1. Kristin Goode-The Island Packet
A good shot. The photographer got great expression. We liked how clean and well composes the photo is. You can really see the fear and relief in the girls faces.

2. Sefton Ipock-Anderson Independent-Mail
We really liked how the photog used so many different elements for what would otherwise be a very typical fire photo. The sun, the firefighter, the ladder and the framing add so much more.

3. Lindsay Semple-The State
Its a nice moment. Kudos to the photographer for seeing it.

General News
1. Heidi Heilbrunn-Greenville News
This is a fantastic photo of powerful emotion, depth and lighting. We quickly agreed that the photo takes the first place prize

2. Jonathan Dyer- The Island Packet
The body language, the cigarette, the gum , the old beat up pick up truck, and the alligator tail all add up for one phenominal photo.

3. Angie Kershner-Morning News
The clean composition and the great light makes this photo an easy stand out in the entire category.

Feature
1. Grace Beahm- Post and Courier
We loved the angle this photo was take from. What really impressed us is the photographers use of the string lines, not only from the bridge but from the boats wake also.

2. Grace Beahm- Post and Courier
The monotone feel from an already surreal setting gives this photo an alien quality that adds to an already strange subject matter. We just kept staring at it.

3. Gerry Melendez- The State
We see this shot often, but rarely are they as successful in storytelling and composition as it is here. I hope the editor gave this photo some size, otherwise they just wasted a good shot.

Sports
1. Ken Ruinard- Anderson Independent-Mail
We all love watching a train wreck and what makes this photo so magnificent is that the photographer got everyone watching it. The open mouthed expression on their faces tell everything and more. Its a magnificent shot.

2. Heidi Heilbrunn- Greenville News
Theres nothing we can say that can elaborate anymore on how superb this photo is by looking at it. The photographer has captured what seems like one of the greatest moments of their lives

3. Grace Beahm-Post and Courier
The reaction tell more about the sporting event than the action. This photo embodies all that and more

Multiple
1. Lindsay Semple-The State
This is a fantastic story. The edit is superb and the photos are beautiful. We konw the story without having to read the captions. An congratulations to the photographer and editor for a magnificent piece. Every photo is strong but when you put it together its powerful

2. Ken Ruinard-Anderson Independent-Mail
We debated extensively on this package and concluded that even though the photos are not the best compositionally , we commend the photographer for capturing the powerful emotions. We actually feel the pain friends and family had to endure. Good Work.

3. Rebecca Ducker- Morning News
A common story but shot extremely well. Its a great edit and the compositions are wonderful, especially in the first photo. Following one prom couple throughout the night is a great concept.
