<p class="MsoNormal"><strong> Stacy Pearsall</strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">Stacy Pearsall began her career as an Air Force combat photographer at 17. She traveled to over 41 countries, and attended S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. After three tours in Iraq, Pearsall shared her experiences as a female combat photojournalist on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Her work has appeared in print and television media, including Time magazine, BBC, The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Soldier of Fortune and more. Pearsall’s photographs have also been featured in the Oscar-nominated PBS production, Operation Homecoming, and GQ magazine’s “This is Our War.” Pearsall was one of only two women to win NPPA’s MPOY competition, and the only woman to have earned it twice. Her images have been exhibited across America from Hollywood to New York. She is now retired from military service and currently freelances. She is the owner/director of the Charleston Center for Photography in South Carolina</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>Christopher Record</strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">Christopher Record is a versatile corporate, portrait, editorial and wedding photographer whose award-winning background in photojournalism influences all of his work.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">With a diverse base of clients including advertising agency Eric Mower and Associates, Farm Bureau Insurance Racing, Crosland, TradeKing, Tier One Partners, Mad GENIUS Inc., the United States Golf Association, the Professional Golfers Association, , Pass &amp; Seymour Legrand, HGTV, the North Carolina Dance Theatre and Habitat for Humanity, Record prides himself on finding the best visual solutions for every assignment.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">Record’s resume is lined with awards from the top photojournalism groups including the National Press Photographers Association, the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar, the Southern Short Course, the Society of Newspaper Design, the North Carolina Press Photographers Association and the North Carolina Press Association. He has been a North Carolina Photographer of the Year, was twice runner-up NC POY and was also runner-up Southern Photographer of the Year.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">Record was the lead photographer on a team project selected as a finalist for the 2008 Pulitzer Prize. The Charlotte Observer project, “Sold a Nightmare,” was a finalist for the Gold Medal for Public Service. The series focused on the area’s high rate of housing foreclosures and questionable sales practices by one of the nation’s largest homebuilders.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">Record has spent the past 20 years photographing presidents, celebrities and athletes and his work has appeared in The New York Times, The London Times, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, U.S. News &amp; World Report, USA Today and numerous other publications and books.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">Record covered the Carolina Panthers from their inception to the Super Bowl in Houston. He has also covered numerous NCAA Final Four basketball tournaments, ACC basketball tournaments and many professional golf tournaments including the men’s and women’s U.S. Open, the PGA Championship, The Players Championship and The Quail Hollow Championship in Charlotte.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">His career has included stints at three newspapers with roles ranging from reporter, photographer, picture editor to director of photography. Record most recently spent 14 years as a staff photographer at The Charlotte Observer in Charlotte, N.C.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">He left newspapers in 2007 to concentrate on his freelance photography business.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Record accepts corporate, portrait and editorial assignments and he also does a select number of documentary weddings each year.</p>

<p>The Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar website is up and running at <a href="http://www.photojournalism.org/" target="_blank">www.photojournalism.org</a></p>
<p>It will be held December 3-5, 2009 at the Atlanta Perimeter Marriott Hotel. The annual seminar - which draws attendees from the U.S. and Canada - features workshops, a speaker series, a print auction and a photojournalism print and multimedia contest. 		<description><![CDATA[We made close to $300 and the SCPA would like for us to do it next year.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I have been wanting to let everyone know how successful the print auction was.</p>
<p>The response was great and so many people enjoyed looking and buying the prints.</p>
<p>I wanted to thank everyone for submitting pictures, we made close to $300 and the SCPA would like us to continue the auction next year.</p>

<p>Here are the January results. Alan Hawes and Gerry Melendez were the big winners for the month.</p>
<p>Thanks to Brian Cassella, Daniel Wallace, and editor Jack Rowland at St. Petersburg Times in Florida for judging.</p>
<p>Start getting your February clips together to send into me soon.</p>
<p>Would like to have them by the 10th! Sooner you get them to me, sooner I get them out and judged with results.</p>
<p>SPOT NEWS:<br />
1st: Alan Hawes-Post and Courier &#8212; Best emotion, with tight composition and contextual framing.<br />
2nd: Nathan Gray Anderson Independent-Mail &#8212; Interesting moment with dog emerging from truck.<br />
3rd: Ken Ruinard Anderson Independent-Mail &#8212; Interesting moment</p>
<p>GENERAL NEWS:<br />
1st: Rebecca Ducker-Florence Morning News &#8212; Great find, a different moment with real expression.  Creative composition.<br />
2nd: Alan Hawes-Post and Courier &#8212; Great moment and emotion.<br />
3rd: Alan Hawes-Post and Courier &#8212; Strong emotion, but photo would be much stronger cropped into a vertical to remove white corner.</p>
<p>FEATURE:<br />
1st: Gerry Melendez-The State &#8212; Creative, clean composition<br />
2nd: Rebecca Ducker-Florence Morning News &#8212; Great moment, suffered from clutter in the composition.<br />
3rd: Gerry Melendez-The State &#8212; Nice background find.</p>
<p>SPORTS:<br />
1st: Gerry Melendez-The State&#8211; Great moment with variety of expressions from young wrestlers.<br />
2nd: Jeff Blake-The State &#8212; Nice catch, getting great emotion out of a coach on the sidelines.<br />
3rd: Alan Hawes-Post and Courier &#8212; Clean action moment, different for basketball.</p>
<p>MULTIPLE:<br />
1st: Grace Beahm-Post and Courier &#8212; Contained the best compositions and editing of the entries.  Several nice photos and varied viewpoints.<br />
2nd: Grace Beahm-Post and Courier &#8212; Last 3 photos are strongest, suffered from mixture with other frames.  Several displays of strong emotion.<br />
3rd: Angie Kershner-Florence Morning News &#8212; Variety of compositions from a straightforward event.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[SCNPA is holding a print auction to help raise money for the 2009 conference.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Hi Everyone-</p>
<p>We are pulling together a print auction to raise money for the SCNPA so we can increase our coffers and make our treasurer Andy Burris happy.</p>
<p>The money will go toward our annual conference that will be held in Columbia next year.</p>
<p>The auction will be held during the annual South Carolina Press Association Meeting in Myrtle Beach so that editors, reporters and the like can bid on the prints.</p>
<p>Please clear the use of images with your editors and remember who the audience is when selecting the images.</p>
<p>Send the images to me printed 8&#215;10ish and signed, you can add a black border around the image if you like before March 11th. Call or email with questions.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span>State photographer Chris Aluka Berry was named the 2008 South Carolina News Photographers Association’s Photographer of the Year during </span><span>The 60th annual<span> </span>Southern Short Course in News Photography seminar held in Charlotte, NC. Gerry Melendez of the State was runner-up and Alan Hawes, Charleston Post and Courier, took third place.</span></p>
<p>Ken Ruinard of the Anderson Independent-Mail was the SCNPA clip contest Photographer of the Year. Sefton Ipock, Anderson Independent-Mail was runner-up. Gerry Melendez, The State was third.</p>
<p><!--StartFragment--><span>Berry also received Best in Show for his feature story on Wateree Correctional Institution inmate, Joshua Reynolds, titled “Second Chances.”</span></p>
<p><!--EndFragment-->The State took Staff of the Year.</p>
<p>I also forgot to post the illustration winners. There where only two honorable mention awards in the category. Tim Dominick, The State  for his &#8220;Connected&#8221; illustration and Rebecca J. Ducker, Florence Morning News for her  &#8221;religion in sports.&#8221;</p>
<p>Congratulations to all the winners! The judges had great things to say about the work. I hope to post the judges comments soon.</p>
